LET'S BE CLEAR

Well, let’s be clear if you don’t like noisy restaurants, where the only possible chance to have a conversation is with the person sitting next to you, and even then, you need to lean in to hear each other, either go for lunch or don’t go at all. Weather permitting it may be better for six or more to sit outside.

To be fair their play list, especially a lunch is terrific and I’m not a fan of music in a restaurant.

my new favourite place

Am I being negative, no not at all? Rosemont Hall encases two restaurant spaces and bar and their quirky charming décor make Rosemont Hall my new favourite place for casual dining. You sort of get an inkling that Rosemont Hall is a bit different when you see the poignant, Aussie Poster by Peter Drew of a Malaysian woman on their back carpark wall.

The décor is so eccentric and fanciful, from the narrow lane on the Sunny’s side with loads of fake cherry blossom stuck in abundant live semi-tropical greenery, muddled with modernist style tiled tables, and old electric lit signage…they even have a mister for those hot summer nights. Sunny’s can also be booked for functions. Although clearly with a Malaysian influence it’s a mish of Southeast Asian and Cantonese with a few other bits of fusion thrown in. This gorgeous venue has plenty of bling and could be in Shanghai or just about any big city, be considered super kühl and would be packed with young Shanghai corporates and expats.

at dinner

Egg Net Spring Rolls, Plum Sauce [6]…. spring roll is not quite the right description for these delicious morsels. Filled with taroI couldn’t work out if they were wrapped in Wu Gok, a crispy net also made from taro or Net Spring Roll wrappers.…delicious! Vegetarian Dumplings, Chilli Vinegar, Ginger [4]…slippery tastiness with a touch of shredded spring onion and beautifully foiled with black vinegar and chilli. Take note none of this nonsense of three of anything. at dinner Crispy Caramel Eggplant, again perfect fried food, came with their own chilli sauce..but, many of you who know Dan Hong’s crispy eggplant will long for his sauce. Nit picking.

We had a small plain rice and a Green Papaya Salad, Snake Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Chilli and Peanuts. Also, very generous with just the right amount of hot sour soft and crunchy.

To finish we had a dessert special, pannacotta with mango and coconut crunch. Whilst generous it was a little bit on the sweet side and would have been better served in a wide shallow dish with more of the excellent toasted coconut crunch. Our table position allowed me to watch the many dishes that passed our table the plan is to return for dinner with at least a pescatarian or carnivore or preferably one of each.

at lunch

updated 17 May, 2026

We returned last week for a Friday lunch, true we were a 1.30 pm booking so very later and they were very, very busy for a lunch in Adelaide.

No table service for a start…well okay, but the menu had been further restricted and some menu items were not available…tsk!!!

We were happy to have their always specialled dumplings, and whilst delicious, especially the prawn dumplings they were luke warm, as was the green chicken curry. Redeemed by the best laksa I have had in Adelaide for a very long time.

Moral? Well maybe don’t eat so late, their lunch has a cut off point of 3.00 pm not unreasonable I guess as they will be hammered again from 6.00 pm, however, if you really want to have lunch and explore their extensive and excellent menu go for lunch on a Saturday where their full dinner menu is available.

Lunch is a chilled out honed down menu that still has plenty of choice and loads of really good specials from food to cocktails. We had the vegetarian dumplings again still four, the Crispy Honey Chicken Dumplings [five] from the half price lunch only dumpling menu $10.

My guess is that at lunch a lot of small eaters may make this their only dish and this might explain the odd number of dumplings. The chicken dumplings were luscious drenched in a honey soy sauce and topped with a smattering of crispy shallots, sesame seeds and a little spring onion.

Our vegetarian, despite having her dominant hand in a in a splint opted for Bahn Mi, Spiced Cauliflower, spiced roasted cauliflower, dill mayo, pickles, cucumber and coriander. Most vegetarian and vegan bahn mi border on the absurd, or is it vile, with the meat always replaced with bland, unseasoned and ungrilled tofu. It was deemed fabulous. Loaded with fresh raw ingredients and loads of roasted seasoned cauliflowerets still with a bit of crunch. It got a big tick for taste and texture. It was enormous, but the only remaining crumbs were on the floor….LOL!

the carnivore and i.......

The carnivore and I shared Stir Fried Pork Belly, Chilli Jam, Green Beans, Kaffir Lime Leaf, Steamed rice. To my delight instead of the promised pork belly it was pork loin pieces, still with the fat [praise be] with just the right chewy, tasty density, a pile of perfectly cooked beans, a couple of snow peas all doused in a delicious sweet sour sauce [not the abysmal pink sort] and again a smattering of crispy shallots. It came with sufficient steamed rice as part of the dish.

Really, really good!

Water comes without prompting but you can purchase imported sparkling water. A smallish wine list there are some great choices and ample wines by the glass, like for instance the Jeffrey Grosset Fiano. Wine pours and cocktails are generously sized.

So much more to explore. They do have a cutoff point of nine diners who need to accept their banquet menu. I am okay with this, but I wouldn’t be shy about asking for the banquet menu to include some of our favourites.

so much
to take in

Toilets during lunch were well maintained, however, at the end of a manically busy Friday night, whilst not out of toilet paper or soap, they were in need of attention.

If you turn up without a dinner reservation Friday to Sunday you may need to wait for a table. Take a seat at this gorgeous bar and have a cocktail or a glass of wine and just take in .

There is a sense of fun in every corner of rosemont hall and this sign positioned below a random [one of several] portraits says it all.

love your local

Be warned, even during the day, Prospect Road is a busy dining precinct and if you are driving it may take you some time to find a park, so factor in a bit of extra time to get to your reservation on time.
