The Adelaide Central Market is a haven for good cheap eats. Best of all most are served up without attitude and in most instances, genuine friendliness. The China Town Café is a personal favourite of mine, always utterly reliable for thirty-plus years. And, of course, like the hundreds of regulars that have frequented China Town Café for as long as I have, I have my favourites as you will see below.

EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE

HIANESE CHICKEN
Hianese Chicken, extra green veg, thigh meat not breast; it comes with steamed rice and small bowl of clear chicken broth with a restrained smattering of chopped spring onion. You help yourself to Lao Gan Ma Chilli Sauce and a less fiery chilli and ginger sauce. I like to add a small splash of soy.

Clean, tasty, you can kid yourself it’s reasonably healthy

SO DELICIOUS!

PRAWN DUMPING SOUP
Prawn Dumpling Soup is yet another favourite. So generous those dumplings are slippery little suckers and even 30 years on I occasionally shamefully lose one to the floor and have to retrieve it red-faced and flustered. Again, one of the virtues of this favourite is its clean simplicity. The dumplings are filled with coarsely chopped prawns, a little black wood fungus.

The same condiments are welcome…don’t add soy without tasting first.

seafood laksa

SEA FOOD LAKSA
I have a friend who never orders anything else, but I always find it hard to go past Hianese Chicken or Prawn Dumplings soup. A luscious rich coconut milk seafood broth base, loads of seafood and noodles I think it is one of Adelaide’s best laksas.

other favourites

Singapore Noodles….a dry noodle dish loaded with chicken seafood, hard tofu and egg it comes with a lemon wedge and is great with the usual embellishments.

Chicken Curry Rice…true to its Malaysian roots, little chicken drumsticks in a rich coconut curry sauce and served with plain steamed rice.
