It is fair to say that Adelaide has none of the fabulous Japanese dining of Melbourne. If you’re looking for the equivalent in Adelaide of, for instance, Minamisha or the less formal Kisume…forget it. There is nothing comparable in Adelaide. It is fair to say that most of Adelaide’s Japanese food is little better than food court food. Some of it is expensive beyond the quality, and to be fair, we have struggled with these recommendations.

We have been careful to explain what to expect and how to negotiate an establishment. You can choose to ignore this advice at your own peril. Add to that, at the moment, quality seafood in Adelaide is very expensive, so there is no such thing as a cheap boat or a cheap plate of sashimi. If you want to eat sashimi you have to be prepared to stump up… and not moan!!!

If you are an early diner, it doesn’t matter where you eat, but you will be rushed. For instance, if you are going to eat early at 有间 KOKONI IZAKAYA you need to make it very clear you do not want all of your choices dumped within thirty minutes. My advice, is not to eat at 6 pm, but when you do you need to make very clear you will not exceed their first sitting, but you want to enjoy your food.

When it comes to sushi I quite often have a snack from Sushi Hub, Rundle Mall, Pulteney Street end. Too much of Adelaide and burbs sushi is fridge cold and inedible. They are incredibly busy at both ends of the mall at lunchtimes….click here for locations. The mall locations are the only ones I have eaten at.

Eaten at but not recommended Bird Yakitori, King William Road, Hyde Park.

We have a list of another six Japanese restaurants in Adelaide, supplied by industry friends, which we will visit over the next few months and add to this page if they are worthwhile.

If you really want to eat Japanese, buy a plane ticket to Melbourne and eat at Kisumé or Minamisha or both if you’re cashed up.

有间 KOKONI IZAKAYA

so far the best

有间 KOKONI IZAKAYA
7 Compton Street
Adelaide
South Australia 5000

OPENING HOURS
Wednesday to Sunday 5:30 pm to midnight
Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays

有间 KOKONI IZAKAYA is beyond cute, and although I have never been to Japan, those who have, assure me that 有间 KOKONI IZAKAYA is precisely what I would find.

Spotlessly clean, the counter is laden with exquisite little glass netsuke and delightful moving toys. There is something beautiful to look at whichever way you turn. When you order, make very clear that you do not want everything at once, and the order in which you want things. This will greatly improve your experience.

It is important to understand that a tiny little restaurant like 有间 KOKONI IZAKAYA relies on diners not hanging around. You eat and you go, whether it is home, the market across the road or to one of the many nearby bars.

Good wine lists are non-existent, but there are plenty of beers, cocktails, spirits and Sake. Cocktails are a bit sweet for my liking, but choosing a gin and tonic worked well with the food. In hindsight, I think an iced Gin, Vodka or Sake would have worked best. I am not a beer drinker but one of our number enjoyed a Japanese beer.

Try skewers of eel and chicken hearts. There are plenty of less adventurous skewers. Don’t miss their truffled chips, which were the best chips I’ve had in Adelaide for some time, or their fried rice, both are probably the best things you’ll get to eat there.

OPENING HOURS

closed Mondays and public holidays

Nishiki is a very modest café-style Japanese eatery. Menu and beverage lists are tattered and torn, but prices are modest and the tempura mushrooms and skewers, apart from the chicken hearts, were really good.

We also ordered a boat, but I think unless a boat is about $100 AUD and you get premium Australian seafood, the offerings at the moment in Adelaide are lacklustre. Not entirely the restaurant’s fault, sourcing fresh local seafood at a price you can afford to put on the plate, is, at the moment very hard to find.

They happily accept BYO and our friend Henry brought two terrific wines from Otherness at Angaston, click on the image below to find out more.

Katsumoto is a favourite with close by office workers and shoppers alike. It is also a favourite with Adelaide’s Japanese community.

It is nothing fancy, and many things like the fried crab claw are straight from the box, but it is not expensive, and their rice bowls and ramen are tasty and generous. They also do Bento Boxes.

My favourite Unagi, eel, was nicely plated and although the eel was not skinned it had been cooked long enough that the skin was edible. Undercooked eel skin is a vile rubbery inedible strip. It also came with miso, which was a bit too fermented for my liking and a couple of pickles.

It was a lunchtime visit and whilst empty when I arrived right on noon, quickly filled with diners who were clearly regulars.

The fried crab claws came without mayonnaise or wasabi, but were provided on request, and, without an additional charge.

They are fully licensed and to my astonishment, boast seventeen Sakis, which is quite a commitment to the favourite alcoholic beverage of Japan. Possibly a favourite of the owner???
